Despite the critical role that science and research play in driving the economy and shaping national priorities, many researchers have limited experience interacting with policymakers. The workings of the civil service, government, and parliament can appear complex and opaque, often leaving researchers unsure of how their work can influence policy. At the same time, policymakers may find it difficult to access or interpret relevant research, especially when findings are buried in technical language or dense academic papers.
This sixth course in the series is designed to bridge that gap, encouraging collaboration between the research community and policymakers. The programme will explore how policy is developed and shaped in the UK, offering insights into both the creative and procedural elements of policymaking. It will also highlight the skills, tools, and outputs used by policy professionals to integrate evidence into decision-making processes.
Beyond the core training sessions, the course provides a valuable opportunity to connect directly with experienced policymakers, researchers, and advocates. Held in person, it emphasises discussion-based workshops that allow for rich, practical engagement—ensuring participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to effectively contribute to evidence-informed policy.
