Infectious diseases continue to pose significant global health challenges, with HIV-1, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and the malaria parasite among the leading causes of death. Other serious pathogens include respiratory viruses and parasites like Toxoplasma, which can severely affect unborn children and immunocompromised individuals. These organisms are the focus of the Host and Pathogen Interest Group, where research explores their growth, metabolism, pathogenicity, resistance mechanisms, and the host’s immune response. This work directly informs the development of new diagnostics, treatments, and preventative strategies, and contributes to shaping public health policies worldwide. These crucial topics will be examined through a unique lens at the upcoming Symbiosis in Myzozoa: From Blood to Oysters to Corals conference in May 2025. The event will spotlight the complex interactions between hosts and parasitic or symbiotic organisms, offering a platform for researchers to share advances in understanding how these relationships influence health, disease, and ecological balance across diverse systems—from human bloodstreams to marine ecosystems.
